The Sword Is the Mind
Shimada Toranosuke, a celebrated swordsman of the nineteenth century, taught that the sword is the mind: if the mind is crooked, the blade will be too. Holding a straight sword vertically before the face, the figure divides it in two, as if checking one against the other.

Charcoal Shadows and a Bright Edge
Everything emerges from near darkness, built with dragged, smoky strokes of black and graphite. Pale highlights catch the shoulders, scalp and knuckles, while the steel blade glows in a long silver line from hilt to tip. Fine white specks drift across the surface like dust in lamplight.

Intensity for a Home Dojo
Training spaces at home, from a spare-room dojo to a mat in the basement, take on a serious tone with it. A dark-walled office can carry the same intensity. Straighten the mind, and the blade follows.
