Balance in Every Plane
Wa, harmony, has been prized in Japan since early times; a constitution attributed to Prince Shōtoku in 604 opens by naming it the highest value. Here harmony becomes a matter of composition: an armored profile divided into blocks, a sun split between ochre and red, every shape answering another. The warrior's calm comes from things being in their right place.

Collage in Ochre, Red and Ink
Black, navy and charcoal panels assemble the silhouette like torn paper, with lacquered armor plates and braided cords showing through. A large circle split into ochre and red sits behind the kabuto and its tall crest, while cream and red rectangles anchor the base. The language is mid-century modern, the subject feudal Japan.

Order for Modern Rooms
Teak and walnut in a mid-century living room give the collage a natural home, especially above a credenza. Mustard cushions and white walls answer its colors, and a home office with clean-lined furniture offers a similar backdrop. Every shape has a place, and so does the warrior.
