Looking Back Without Looking Away
Head bowed and eyes closed, the warrior turns inward. Reflection ran deep in samurai culture, from the study of Zen to the farewell poems some composed near the end of their lives. Here the face seems assembled from pieces, as if memory were rebuilding a person one fragment at a time. Honest self-examination can ask more of a person than any duel.

Navy Ground, Golden Seams
Deep navy and slate surfaces are split by a web of copper and gold seams, a nod to the Japanese repair art of kintsugi, while flecks that read like gold leaf gather along the cheek and brow. Scattered vermilion dots and a weathered, scratched texture add warmth and age to an otherwise cool, graphic composition.

Depth for Calm Interiors
Its cool blues and warm metallic accents suit a therapist's office, a boutique hotel-style suite, or the wall above a velvet sofa. Brass hardware and warm wood bring out the gold. Some portraits are seen once; this one rewards returning to, again and again.
